Greens lead candidate for Ward 2 Kit Docker is calling on Wollongong City Council to address the significant accessibility issues faced by residents across Figtree.
Kit said for too long residents with mobility issues, people living with a disability, children walking to school and parents with prams have been faced with significant barriers when trying to move about their community. Without adequate footpaths and safe crossings, many residents are simply unable to get around and are restricted to their homes and reliant on cars.
“Wollongong Council has consistently failed the residents of Figtree in providing greater freedom of choice in how they navigate their community—leaving the family car as the only viable means of safe transport,” Kit said.
“In many parts of Figtree, parents with prams and kids walking to school are left with no other choice than to venture onto busy roads.
“Investing in safer crossings and pathways is not just about improving infrastructure, but ensuring the well-being and connectivity of our communities. It's time for councils to prioritise these investments, enabling people to navigate their surroundings safely and seamlessly.
“It's evident from discussions with Figtree residents that the speed of vehicles on local streets poses a significant hazard to residents and their property with many in the community already impacted.
The next Council must explore all options that reduce the prevalence of speeding and ensure local residents can enjoy safer communities. ”
Greens candidate for Ward 2 Ali Gerritsen said parents are seen pushing prams alongside traffic on the roads and kids are still left without a crossing on Uralba Street. Kids need to be able to walk to and from school safely.
“Figtree could be a walkable, pram and bike-friendly area, kids love riding to school but the lack of connecting footpaths and pedestrian crossings makes it difficult and dangerous,” Ms Gerritsen said.
It is literally ‘struggle street’ trying to navigate with a pram around here.”
