Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. A recent study found that nearly half of Australia’s transgender population has attempted suicide, revealing the depth of the problem facing gender and sexuality diverse communities.
Greens candidate for Cunningham Dylan Green wants all LGBTQIA+ people to be free from discrimination.
“Our community is broad and varied, and no two people are the same,” said Dylan. “No one should be discriminated against for their gender, sexuality, or any other reason.
“It is shocking that we still have leaders willing to use discrimination as a political tool. Australians deserve politicians who unite people and look out for everyone.
“The Greens want to appoint a Minister for Equality and an LGBTIQA+ Human Rights Commissioner, tasked with making equality a core goal of government, and protecting people from discrimination.
“This would be accompanied by a Ministerial Advisory Group to ensure that decisions regarding diverse communities are made with meaningful consultation.
“Everybody deserves to feel safe and respected in our country. We just need the will to make it happen.”
