Greens Councillor Cath Blakey has called for investment in koala crossing points after footage shows a koala being struck by two vehicles on Appin Road.
Disturbing dashcam footage shared on Facebook shows a koala being by a car on Appin Road. The driver immediately turned around to alert other drivers, capturing the moment the koala is struck a second vehicle.
Greens Councillor Cath Blakey said, "The Greens are calling on the State government to invest in koala crossing points, especially at Mallaty Creek which is the shortest crossing point between the Nepean and St Georges River just near where this koala was hit.
"We need these crossings in place now, before any future road expansion or vegetation clearance occurs. The delay puts the current koala population at serious risk."
The koala was struck by on Appin Road just between the Nepean River and Dharawal National Park South of the Gilead "Figtree Hill" development.
"On Monday night, 12 August, I will seek Council's support to call on the State government to add an additional koala corridor underpass to Appin Road at Mallaty Creek," Cr Blakey said.
Cr Blakey's Notice of Motion:
I formally move that –
1 Council writes to the NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, the Minister for Environment, and the Minister for Roads calling for an additional koala corridor underpass to be added on Appin Road at Mallaty Creek.
2 Council makes a submission to the Transport for NSW Appin Road Safety Improvements consultation calling for an additional koala corridor underpass to be added on Appin Road at Mallaty Creek.
