Greens win fight to protect public land from for-profit development in Newcastle and Wollongong

Public land, including the hockey fields at Broadmeadow in Newcastle and the waterfront training oval next to WIN Stadium in Wollongong, will be off-limits to property developers thanks to successful Greens amendments to a Labor government bill.

NSW Greens MP Amanda Cohn, who was formerly on the Albury Council, cheekily confirmed her party had not made the same mistake.
"Communities across NSW can be reassured that all 376 Greens local government candidates and 22 mayoral candidates got their paperwork in," she said.
"There are excellent candidates to vote for on September 14."

Cath Blakey, Greens Councillor and state candidate for Wollongong joined the Mothers and Midwives of the Illawarra community picnic to launch the Greens commitment to announce paid placements for nurses, midwives and paramedics in training.

"This is an absolutely critical issue because your health shouldn't depend on your postcode."
"I think the bigger question is what does it cost to not do this. We know that if people can't afford to see a GP they'll end up in the hospital emergency departments when they're sicker and they need hospital admission. It's actually more cost effective to fund that primary care up front and get people the care they need early. If you budget that out over the long term it's going to save the health system money."

"In the first instance getting [a primary health care centre] into the southern part of the South Coast seat is absolutely essential, because what we have in the south is a very small hospital that's not fit for purpose. There's not even an MRI available to residents in the Milton-Ulladulla area."
